How to plug a tire — the actual procedure
- Find the leak. Spray soapy water on the tread; bubbles mark the hole. Mark it with chalk.
- Pull the object (nail, screw, etc.) with the included pliers. Note the angle — you'll insert the plug at the same angle.
- Ream the hole. Push the spiral reamer in and out 5–6 times to roughen the inside of the puncture. This is what lets the plug bond.
- Load the plug. Thread a brown vulcanizing plug halfway through the eyelet of the insertion tool. Wipe rubber cement on the plug if your kit includes it.
- Insert. Push the insertion tool into the puncture until about 3/8" of plug remains above the tread. Pull straight back out — the plug stays.
- Trim flush with a knife or scissors. Reinflate to spec. Recheck pressure 24 hours later.
